I am in my late sixties. I never saw the cartoon, but I heard the song on the radio program "No School Today" when I was just five, and have never forgotten it. I'm so glad to have found this blog - now I'm gonna head over to Amazon dot communism to see if I can find the song for sale.

My mother had the sheet music and would play and sing this for me- there was a mouse, who longed to be, a bird and fly about. He asked a fairy queen he knew, to kindly help him out.
The fairy queen gave him some wings and told him he could fly. And right away the little mouse went sailing in the sky. He flew up to a big dark cave and hanging over head, there was a great big ugly bat, who spoke right up and said. Hello there kid, you sure look like a brother bat to me. To which the little mouse replied, (can't remember). The bat replied no mouse can fly so if you ain't a bat, there's only one thing you can be , you're nothing think of that
Chorus.

PatsyM my dad used to sing this song to me as a kid and from time to time I do a search to find something about this.. He sang it similar to your version. there once was a very little mouse who longed to fly about. He asked a a fairy queen he knew to kindly help him out. The Fairy Queen gave him some wings and told him he could fly. And pretty soon that little mouse went sailing through the sky. He flew into a big dark cave and hanging overhead, He saw a very big black bat who spoke right up and said: Hello there kid you sure look like a brother bat to me.. Oh no I'm not I'm just a mouse that's all I long to be.. If you're not a bat you're nothing a silly and a dumb thing,at least a bat is something, you're not a thing at all..

I remember this from a record we had when I was kindergarden-ish. It was a manta that rang in my head any time I got sad or depressed, "I'm nothing but a nothing, I'm not a thing at all". Not the best manta for keeping a healthy self-image. Funny what kids pick up selectively when young, then carry forward with them for a lifetime...

I also had this on a record when I was very small (nearly 60 years ago)
and it stuck in my head. I have periodically tried to find it over the years, and this morning found this blog! I'm not imagining it!

I had this record and LOVED IT! I believe my Dad got it for his 7 kids before he passed away from an accident. It's a big Segway for a lot of jokes in our family. I haven't thought about it in 50 years. ❤️

I had that record! The song was about a boy who wanted to fly. He did, but birds didn't accept him. Hence the You're Nothing' I know the 1st verse. You're nothing ..........then "to be an owl is is one, a silly and a dumb thing. But you, you 're nothing you'-re nothing you're not a thing at all."

Thank you so much to everyone who has kept this song as treasured as I have. You are my people, and I had begun to wonder if there were any of us left.
